Syd’s First Kayak

It’s a new year and for many a new start. It seems to be traditional to turn over that new leaf of change as the New Year is welcomed in. Fitness, health, finance, and spending quality time with family and friends are at the top of almost every list. To some extent I follow that tradition, and today I am embarking on a new world through this blog. I set aside the traditional 9 to 5 workday in exchange for the pursuit of my passion for writing and photography. It is a bit scary leaving the structured corporate world, but invigorating to accept the challenge to be on your own to design your future.

I think back almost 15 years ago when I had an unused airline ticket that was nearing expiration. My birthday was approaching and I decided I would use that ticket to treat myself to a vacation, destination unknown. I scoured the internet for popular locations, but just could not find the right fit. I eventually stumbled upon a group that conducted guided kayak and camping tours while spotting orca whales. That was it! At last I found something totally different than anything I had ever experienced. I immediately booked it and told my family of my plans. My children thought I was nuts since I had never kayaked in my life, I was not very fond of camping, there were no bathrooms or showers for this 4 day adventure, and I would be with total strangers.

I took that trip and had the time of my life. I made new friends and learned to kayak. It was not long before I had my own kayak to explore rivers, lakes, and oceans where I found a wealth of wonderful memories and breathtaking adventures. I often think back on how much I would have missed and how different my life would be had I not taken that trip.

As I venture into this New Year, I am thankful for the opportunities and experiences I have had and that I have been able to reinvent myself along the way, be it in my personal or professional life. Life is about taking chances and mixing it up sometimes and not playing it so safe. Challenge yourself this year to do something different. You may not always come out a winner, but hopefully the journey will be worth the effort. Happy New Year!
